Rack Unit Calculator

The rack unit calculator converts rack units to physical measurements and answers the capacity question directly: how many devices fit in a rack. Enter the rack height in U, the height of the equipment you plan to install, and any space reserved for PDUs, cable managers, or blanking panels.

A single rack unit is 1.75 inches (44.45 mm), so a 42U rack is 73.5 inches tall and a 48U rack is 84 inches. The calculator converts both heights, subtracts the reserved space, and divides the remaining units by the device height so you know the real fit before hardware arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How tall is 1U in inches and millimetres?
One rack unit (1U) is 1.75 inches, or 44.45 millimetres. The height comes from the EIA-310 standard, which also fixes the 19 inch rack width and the hole spacing used by mounting rails.
How tall is a 42U rack?
A 42U rack is 73.5 inches (1,867 mm) tall, and it is the most common full height server rack. Multiply 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) by the number of units to find the height of any other rack, such as 48U at 84 inches (2,134 mm).
How many 1U servers fit in a 42U rack?
A 42U rack has 42 units of vertical space, so it holds up to 42 1U servers with no overhead. Real deployments reserve a few units for PDUs, cable management, and airflow, so plan for roughly 38 to 40 usable 1U positions.
How many 2U servers fit in a 42U rack?
A 42U rack holds up to 21 2U servers, because each one occupies two units of height. Subtract any space reserved for power and cable management first, then divide the remaining units by two.
